TSX- and NYSE American-listed Galiano Gold has informed shareholders that it has temporarily suspended operations at the Esaase deposit at its Asanko gold mine, in Ghana, after clashes between community members and military personnel on September 9.

The presence of military personnel at the gold mine forms part of a State-mandated security intervention coordinated through the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the gold miner points out.

It adds that tensions between the community members and military personnel had escalated, leading to civil unrest, the death of one person and damage to contractor equipment at the mine.

"The company shares in the community's grief over the tragic loss of life and extends its heartfelt condolences to the affected families during this difficult time.

"Galiano is supporting local authorities, government officials, and community leaders as investigations are under way and the company remains committed to maintaining constructive dialogue with all stakeholders," it says.

It notes that, while operations at the Esaase deposit have been suspended, operations at the Abore deposit and processing plant are unaffected.
